The potato originates in South America, and it is uncertain when and how it came to Europe. Initially it was imported because of its lovely blooms and profuse foliage and only later used as a foodstuff. The tubers from the potato plant which are below ground are used. Nowadays it is cultivated worldwide and is a staple food.
