Christmas in the forest

In many European countries it used to be customary to burn a so-called Christmas log in the fireplace at Christmas. This was the case in France. When the large wood-burning stoves were no longer in use, the custom was quickly changed and the actual log became a chocolaty  baked goods variant.

The resulting bûche de noël is a sponge roulade with chocolate, vanilla or raspberry cream, covered in chocolate and decorated to resemble a tree trunk. No wonder really – “bûche” in French means log.

What do you think, will your stollen or panettone have a typical French neighbour in future? We say: Mais oui!
